Allergies & Dermatology

Have you ever suffered an allergy, infection or problem with your skin that caused itchiness, irritation and even pain? Dermatological disorders can seriously affect your quality of life. It’s the same for our animal companions. Pets can suffer from many skin conditions as well, along with their unpleasant symptoms. If you’ve noticed your pet has been scratching more than usual, or you can visibly see a problem, such as bald spots or a rash, there’s a good chance that he or she is suffering from some type of dermatological disorder. Don’t worry – the team at Perimeter Veterinary Center can help!

Our highly skilled veterinarians are trained and experienced in identifying, diagnosing and treating a broad spectrum of dermatological problems. Some of the conditions we can assist with include, but are not limited to:

  • Allergies
  • Infections
  • Parasites
  • Hormonal Disorders
  • Diseases of the Skin, Ears or Feet
  • Autoimmune Disorders
  • Genetic Conditions
  • Tumors
  • Skin Cancers

The key to managing a dermatological disorder is getting to the bottom of what’s causing it in the first place. At Perimeter Veterinary Center, we use a variety of tools to help us achieve timely and accurate diagnoses. These tools include skin scrapings, laboratory testings, biopsies and more. Once we’ve pinpointed the exact cause of your pet’s symptoms, we’ll get to work developing a treatment plan that will reduce or eliminate the problem altogether.

There are a number of ways we can address a skin disorder in a pet, and it ultimately depends on what the problem is. We may recommend the use of topical or oral medication, supplements, therapy, surgery, or any combination of these. We may also recommend making some changes in your pet’s home environment. Often, simple changes like switching foods or removing common household items that may be acting as irritants can eliminate the problem without the need for further medical intervention.

Some of the signs that your pet may be experiencing some type of dermatological problem include:

  • Chronic itchiness
  • Excessive licking, chewing or biting at the affected area
  • Frequent shaking of the head
  • Hair loss / bald spots
  • Hot spots
  • Inflamed or uncomfortable ears
  • Odor
  • Flaky skin / dandruff
  • Red, itchy bumps on the skin (rash)
  • Scabbing
  • Runny eyes or nose

If you notice your pet showing any of these symptoms, it’s time to schedule an appointment. Don’t let your companion suffer another moment with itchy, painful dermatological problems. Let us get the problem under control so your pet can enjoy a more comfortable life.
